I introduced "Play" and "Rest" for the Quarter-Note/Quarter-Rest musical vocabulary in the Just Rhythm Music Reading Readiness Kit.
The three-year-old musician read and played the notation cards accurately, substituting "sleep" for "rest". I changed "rest" to "silence" in order to teach the musical vocabulary more accurately for her.
I love working with these very young children!
